Say-so is an event that incorporates a group exhibition of artwork, as well as a screening of the award-winning documentary Maktoub by the French-Tunisian filmmaker Sonia Ben Slama, who focuses on gender roles and the representation of women in film, as well as the ideas of cultural fate and free will.
The event featured an introduction about the Tunisian revolution and subsequent political transition by Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, Ph.D. student in Sociology, as well as the gathering of a group of artists whose work is relevant to questions raised in the film and by cultures at large:
In what ways can one be trapped by their own culture?
How do you create your own space?
How do you resist the destiny a culture creates for you?
To what extent does one have free will?
How does one build a place in counterpoint?
The screening was followed by a Q&A where we discussed the different approaches used by artists in their practice to create space for themselves and a community.
With works from artists: Mohhamed Al Mohsin, Camille Altay, Selva Aparicio, Sula Bermudez, Bianca Boragi, Loren Britton, Sonia Kessi, Young Joo Lee, Ilana Savdie, Iman Raad, Shahrzad Changalvaee, Walker Olensen, Ye Wang, Valentina Zamfirescu.
